Hey, I’ve been wanting to write a novel for ages, and I finally have an idea: it’s about a 16-year-old girl who discovers she can talk to ghosts of people who died in her small town’s old mill—but only when she’s holding a specific locket her grandma left her. But I’m totally stuck on the first chapter. Should I start with her finding the locket? Or show her first time talking to a ghost? Also, how do I make the first page feel exciting enough to keep someone reading without spilling all the secrets right away? I don’t know if I should set the scene of the town first or jump straight into the action. Can you help me figure out where to begin? I really want this first chapter to be good, but I’m not sure how to start it off right.
